Housing as a Form of Structural Inequality

Access to safe and adequate housing remains one of the most significant challenges facing Roma and Romanian migrant communities in the United Kingdom.

Many families experience barriers that go beyond individual circumstances. These include:

·       Discrimination in the private rental sector

·       Limited access to social housing due to complex eligibility criteria

·       Language barriers and lack of accessible information

·       Overcrowded living conditions

·       Informal rental arrangements without written contracts

·       Increased vulnerability to eviction and homelessness

·       Fear of approaching authorities due to past negative experiences

Housing insecurity is not only a socialissue — it reflects deeper structural inequalities linked to poverty, migration status, racial discrimination, and limited access to services.

Without stable housing, families face additional challenges in employment, education, health, and child protection.

Housing instability can reinforce cycles of disadvantage across generations.

At Union Romani Voice, we recognise housing as a fundamental human right and work to address both immediate needs and the structural barriers affecting our community.
